Hold the Moment
The second in a series of workshops exploring paper, foraged fibre, memory and place.
Participants are welcome to attend only one day of the weekend, but to attend Day 2 you must have attended an Introduction Day 1 previously. Please bring any paper you have made and material for inclusion in the vessel – something special perhaps – or find something from West Moss-side for your memory of place.
Cost £95.00 per day including all materials. Refreshments and home baking provided. Bring a potluck lunch to share.
Day 1: 10.00am – 4.30pm
Introduction to making paper from foraged fibres such as rush, bracken, moss, willow bark and even peat. Collect samples of materials at West Moss-side, likely to be suitable for papermaking.
- Collect items to be used as inclusions in the paper or in the vessels you will make.
- Introduction and discussion about wet pulps and dry resources available for use in the workshop.
- Demonstration of how to prepare and cook plant material in preparation for paper making.
- Use a broad variety of pre-processed plant material both foraged and commercial – to use as the base of the pulp for paper sheets.
Potluck Lunch
- Discuss and plan paper making in view of potential vessel forms to be made on Day 2.
- Experimenting with forming pulps into sheets for Day 2./li>
Day 2: 10.00am – 4.30pm
An exploration of some simple methods of creating vessels from sheet form paper and foraged plant material
- Review drying sheets, colour, rates of shrinkage, fragility etc.
- Make a small simple mould and apply a sheet.
Potluck Lunch
- Experiment with making larger /more complex forms which can be taken home to dry.
