| Title |
Yurt Building with Paul Millard |
| Description |
A day's workshop will introduce the participants to the
traditions and culture of the Central Asian nomad. This will be
supported with slides. We will learn to assemble a completed yurt.
During the course of the day, components for a complete
yurt will be assembled. This will involve steam bending elm for the
rafters, ash for the wall poles and oak, to form the crown. A
previously prepared crown will be burnt with tapered holes to receive
the rafters.
The green wood used in the process is sourced from local Scottish woodlands. |
About the tutor
|
Paul Millard builds yurts. They are very beautifully made of ancient design and combining wood with fibre. Paul started Red Kite Yurts about the same time as West Moss-side was finished. The idea of running yurt-building workshops here seemed a good one. The stories and images from his 2007 trip to Krykistan fascinated me and he is very knowledgeable about nomadic peoples and their yurts ( Kate Sankey)

| What should I bring with me? |
It is advisable to wear old clothes (warm!) You will need to bring
gloves and a sturdy pair of shoes/boots. If you have eye protection
then bring them along too. Camera and notebook would be a good idea! |
| Are there any other related courses I can attend? |
The highly decorated and functional wall bands are all made from felt. So why not come and try your hand at felt making - there are different styles of felt workshops at West Moss-side using different techniques. |
| What have other attendess said about this course? |
I really enjoyed it and came away feeling truly energised by the experience. Of
course all that lovely organic food may have had something to do with it too!
Learning through doing! Whole body sensory experience! smoke, steam, fire and wood, using tools, working as a team doing krypton factor(!) yurt building.
Gave me lots of confidence when it comes time to assembling my own!
Learnt so much with a lovely group of people and delicious food.
Looking forward to owning our own one day.
