Course Details - Traditional Irish Creel

Another great workshop with Catherine Davies. This time its the Traditional Irish Creel. Creels were the basket used for carrying and carting all agricultural and fishing materials. With a strong structure they make excellent log baskets.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Title Traditional Irish Creel with Catherine Davies
Description A workshop to make a Traditional Irish Creel. Use it for collecting the peats, the seaweed or the potatoes or like me use it as a log basket which will look good by the fire and will last a lifetime.
About the tutor
I've known Catherine since she began basket making. She used to live just up the road in Thornhill village before heading out to the Isle of Eigg.  Basket making came naturally to her and her dedication to understanding the weaves and the structures of the traditional baskets of Scotland and Ireland can be seen in her own beautiful creations. It is great to have her at West Moss-side to pass on her skills. (Kate Sankey)

Prerequisite knowledge/skills
No previous skills are required to come on this workshop, although if you have done one of Catherine's other courses you will have a good foundation for this technique. As the willow is quite large, this course is not suitable for anyone with arthritis or very weak fingers and thumbs.
Course format
Creels are made upside-down unlike the traditional base with uprights. Traditionally these creels would have been made outside with the stakes stuck into the ground but we will use boards with holes for the stakes. You will be introduced to the techniques of creel design and construction using Flanders Red willow grown at West Moss-side. You will be able to complete one creel over the weekend and may also make smaller items using the same technique.
After completing this course...
You will leave this workshop with a log basket and knowledge of the traditional Irish Creel techniques. There are books available to browse in the Centre.
