ABOUT THE COURSE

Title Yurt Building with Paul Millard
Description

A day's workshop will introduce the participants to the traditions and culture of the Central Asian nomad. This will be supported with slides. We will learn to assemble a completed yurt.

During the course of the day, components for a complete yurt will be assembled. This will involve steam bending elm for the rafters, ash for the wall poles and oak, to form the crown. A previously prepared crown will be burnt with tapered holes to receive the rafters.

The green wood used in the process is sourced from Scottish woodlands.

About the tutor
Paul Millard builds yurts. They are very beautifully made of ancient design and combining wood with fibre.  Paul started Red Kite Yurts about the same time as West Moss-side was finished. The idea of running yurt-building workshops here seemed a good one.  The stories and images from his 2007 trip to Krykistan  fascinated me and he is very knowledgeable about  nomadic peoples and their yurts (Kate Sankey)
