Course Details - Fine Felt Scarves

One day workshop in scarf making where we will look at various different techniques, including a cobweb scarf, a grid scarf and a nuno scarf. How many you make depends on experience and energy. We will look at creating shape and movement in scarves. We will also look at colour and blending. There will be a wealth of beautiful wool, fibres and materials to work with.

About the tutor
It is great to have Charlotte Haines tutoring here at West Moss-side. She  will be working together with Saskia Gavin in a series of three felt workshops introducing different felting techniques.  Charlotte Haines and Saskia Gavin are two felt and fibre artists from Edinburgh.  (Kate Sankey)

Prerequisite knowledge/skills
No previous felting knowledge is required for this workshop just enthusiasm and a willingness to experiment, create and play with textures. The workshop is suitable for both beginners and more experienced felt makers. For beginners you will gain an understanding of how to felt and all the possibilities of colour, form and technique. More experienced felt makers could explore different techniques such as nuno using the vast array of material which will be available.
Course format

In the morning you will make a scarf or maybe two, depending on the technique being used and your experience and after lunch we will look at making a nuno scarf. You will have the opportunity to develop a style and experiment with colour and texture.

After completing this course...
As well as mastering a range of felt-making techniques, you will take home 2-3 fine felt pieces - it will all depend on the complexity of your designs and your creativity! You will be able to purchase marino wool and other special fibres to create your own fine felt pieces back home - it's that easy and you will be hooked!

What should I bring with me?

Materials will be provided however if you have any special fibres or delicate precious materials such as scraps of wool, knitting, textiles or lace you want to incorporate in your piece, then please bring it along and Charlotte and Saskia will advise.  Don't forget a notebook and your camera.
