| Title |
Willow Square Work with Jane Wilkinson |
| Description |
This 2-day workshop will introduce you to the basic techniques for
making traditional willow square -work baskets. You will make one shopper with a handle or a trug and
there will be time to practice the different elements a the basket - especially the square work , weaves, border and handle. |
About the tutor
|

It was Jane Wilkinson who introduced me to the wonderful world of willow weaving. I attended a weekend workshop and produced two fantastic baskets (well I thought they were!) - and that was it. She shared her skills and experiences both of willow basketry but also growing and cultivating willow and I was hooked. ( Kate Sankey)
You can find a more comprehensive bio here. |
Prerequisite knowledge/skills |
This is an introduction to square work. It is best suited to those who have made a round basket and so have a little knowledge of working with willow. |
Course format |
Over the two days there will be sessions on the different techniques
associated with each element of the square shopper and trug. Jane will give you plenty of practice, she will share her skills and there will be time to share problems under her expert
guidance. The shopper and the trug will also encorporate both a border AND a handle. So you will gain the additional techniques of doing a handle. |
After completing this course... |
As well as having your own beautiful shopper or a trug to take to use in the home and the garden, you will know how to do square work in other projects and also the technique of making a handle for a basket. |

The Introduction to Traditional Willow Baskets with Catherine Davies is always popular and can be used as a refresher too. Other types of techniques Catherine teaches are the one day Taska 'knot' platter workshop, and the Traditional Irish Creel. New to West Moss-side in 2008 was a Creative Willow Basketry weekend with Georgia Crook , and then there is Random weaving and willow sculptures with Anthea Naylor and others ... coming soon ... |
