Course Details - Embroidered Batik Cushions

Great workshops with Jan Kilpatrick of Wild Tiles & Textiles. This workshop  combines the creative potential of batik and machine embroidery with the practical skill of making cushion covers.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Title Embroidered Batik Cushions with Jan Kilpatrick
Description This will be Jan's third workshop to run at West Moss-side and we now know just what a treat is in store.  Using recycled materials and odds and ends, this workshop will involve using the ancient technique of batik together with free-style stitching of all sorts to produce highly decorative AND practical cushion covers.
About the tutor
Jan Kilpatrick
Jan has hosted a variety of fascinating workshops at West Moss-side including Making Mosaics, Experimental Mosaics , Making Papers from Scrap,  Nature Journals and Paper, Picture, Poetry.  She has moved to the north west and so sadly it is really too far for Jan to teach at West Moss-side. But she may come by special invitation in 2008.
Jan links her work with sustainable development education. With her background as a teacher she inspires learning which is fun and expresses the connections with the natural world in wild and suprising ways.  Learning a new craft skill in a group is a great way of getting to know each other and share ideas.

Recently Jan ran an Away Day here at West Moss-side for staff of Eco-Schools Scotland. It was a wonderful way for them to get to know each better and discover new possibilities of working within a team. (Kate Sankey)

Course format

The whole of the first day will be spent producing a good number of vibrant batik samplers, from which you will choose two to take forward to the next stage which is machine embroidery(the rest can be stitched once you get home).

On the second day, using a free-embroidery technique, you will embellish these surfaces with stitchwork. There may also be the opportunity to use other decorative items such as ribbons and buttons.
