An immensely practical 2-day workshop with the prospect of taking home more than just a head full of ideas!

ABOUT THE COURSE

Title Cane and Rush Seating Weekend with Susie Bishop
Description

A weekend workshop in cane and rush chair seating restoration with Susie Bishop. Bring along your own chair if you have one - or contact Susie for ideas - or maybe you would like to make a small stool?

About the tutor
Susie's work is wonderful.  The patterns are beautifully intricate yet with simple elegance and symmetry.   Just imagine sitting on a chair that you have restored to its original glory!  Don't miss this course.   You could follow up on the weekend course with the 5 week evening class too. Prerequisite knowledge/skills
No previous skills are required to come on this workshop.
Course format
You will learn how to select the cane and how to weave all stages of the basic 6-way pattern to repair an old chair seat or back with cane. Techniques will be demonstrated and individual advice offered as necessary. It should be possible to finish a small chair of simple design in the 2 days. Larger or more complicated seats may take longer, but you will have acquired the knowledge and skills you need to complete your project.

If you chose to use rush - then it's a different technique - but all the stages will be explained. Again you should have enough time to complete a small chair or stool in the weekend.

After completing this course...
You will have learned and practiced all the basic skills necessary to restore old chairs. As a bonus, you will take home an old chair that has become both more useful and beautiful.

What should I bring with me? You will need to bring a chair frame with cane seat (the cane will go into holes that pass through the seat frame). If it needs repairing, painting or polishing this will have to be done before the course, as it is difficult to do afterwards. (Check with Susie re advice on removing cane).

Please bring, if you have them: craft or Stanley knife, ruler, sponge or J-cloth in old margarine tub or similar, sidecutters or long- handled toenail cutters, 20 or 30 golf tees for pegs or pegs can be made from offcuts of willow or centre cane, long-nosed pliers. Other tools will be available to borrow or buy.

IMPORTANT: If you do not have a suitable chair to restore, please let us know when you book.

Are there any other related courses I can attend?
If your old chair has a rush seat then you need to come along to Susie Bishop's  Rush Seating Workshop. The next one is August 23rd/24th.

If you want to do a second chair in cane seating then there will be another Cane Seating workshop later in the year - and there will be a 10% reduction on your a second weekend!
